Paying by Cell Phone App? Not So Fast

There seems to be a strong push by banks and credit card companies urging small merchants to allow customers to make purchases by using their smart phones.

And while the idea has taken hold in other countries, adoption in this country is lagging, largely because merchants are hesitant to spend on new technology in the current economy.

Mobile payments “has reached a tipping point where it can start being a meaningful technology” in the United States, Naresh Kumar, chief operating officer of Citigroup Inc’s cards unit, told the Business Standard. But that doesn’t mean everyone is buying in.
