Survey: “Dollar Store” Visits Surge

New research shows that consumers are cutting back on the number of stores they visit when shopping, but that “dollar stores” are enjoying increased activity.

The report from SymphonyIRI Group puts it all in perspective: “Shoppers are not enjoying the same financial success as corporations this spring and summer, and their continued search for lower-cost retail channels reflects this,” John McIndoe, SVP marketing at SymphonyIRI, said in a release.

But there was a bright spot: Year-over year, dollar stores enjoyed a 50 basis-point increase from 2009, according to the research.
