The Line: Margolin Shoes & Apparel is an experienced brand name closeout dealer in the shoes and sports apparel markets. The brand name closeout shoes available range in style from athletic and casual to boots and sandals, and are suited for all members of the family, with sizes for youth, women and men. There are new best sellers frequently, as the product is only available at closeout prices in a limited quantity. Top sellers can be forecasted based on the season. For example, sandals sell best in summer and boots sell best in winter. Sports apparel is a newer line of closeout merchandise for Margolin and is also seasonal, but more closely associated with sports seasons. The line covers both adult and children’s apparel, including shirts, sweatshirts, jackets, wind pants, sweatpants, tank tops and well known team jerseys, which are some of the more popular items from the sports apparel line.

Literature: A print catalog can be requested and should arrive within seven to ten business days. However, catalogs are also maintained online in order to reflect Margolin’s current inventories as much as possible. Any catalog received in the mail should be compared to the online version, as inventory quickly changes and an item may sell out. Customers trying to view the complete catalog online need a login and password.

Minimum Order/Pricing: Margolin sells only by the case pack, and depending on the item, this can be a case pack of 12, 18, 24 or 36. The minimum order is $300, and prepacks and minimums are listed with each item in the product catalog when applicable. Margolin’s enormous buying power not only allows the firm to sell top name brands, but also for prices around 50 percent off regular wholesale prices. Closeouts in the company’s shoe line are available between $3.50 to $25, while apparel can be purchased between $3.75 to $30. Retailers can expect to make keystone and more.

Special Features: Volume discounts may be negotiated with a personal call. As Margolin only deals in closeouts, the company does not accept returns or exchanges, except for manufacturer’s defects. A claim can be made no later than seven days from the shipping date.

Management Says: “I’ve seen a growing demand in sports apparel as of late, it used to be that people wanted to show pride for their team, but now it’s a style that is fashion forward, which is why we are happy to offer closeout sports apparel.” –Danny Kohanchi, Vice President.

The rapid advancement of technology has blurred the line between children’s toys and grown-up gadgets. Electronic goods, which were once considered exclusive adult products, are now trickling down to the younger generation, including iPods, cell phones, and digital video recorders. Profiting from this technology trend are wholesale toy suppliers and the retailers buying from them. A direct importer of advanced toys for the past four years, My Toy Wonders wholesales battery operated and remote-controlled (RC) toys, especially RC helicopters. “We sell everything from mini to extra large-sized helicopters. Minis are our best sellers as they are durable, charge fast, and are easy to operate, especially for the younger ages. Our larger helicopters are a little more advanced, with a targeted age of 14 years and up,” says president of My Toy Wonders, Zack Yildirim.

Hi-tech Toys for Children and Adults

However, the company’s prized line, RC Camera Helicopters, are medium in size, technologically stimulating, and a favorite for the whole family. “We launched the new line in March, and they are our main focus for this year,” Yildirim emphasizes. “We’re going to have many styles this coming holiday season. Right now we have two styles available, and we’ll have another two or more by mid October.” All inclusive, the RC Camera Helicopter is preassembled for immediate flight and comes with a 1 GB SD card for capturing images, and a gyroscope function to stabilize the helicopter in air. “The video camera is the real intrigue of this product. It can record for as long as the helicopter can fly, without needing a charge. And while the recording is not HD quality, it is very good quality and can easily be downloaded and watched on any PC or laptop,” notes Yildirim.

Buying direct from factories overseas provides My Toy Wonders with low costs that are then passed on to buyers. Models wholesaling for less than $20 dollars, and the RC Camera Helicopters available for $70 and $90 wholesale, can be expected to retail for keystone and triple the purchase price. All products are authenticated by My Toy Wonders branded packaging, a decision made by Yildirim as he tries to protect his customers from frauds on the market. Other benefits retailers can expect when doing business with this West Coast wholesaler include monthly specials regularly updated online, no minimum requirements (except for a one case minimum during the holiday season), mix and match orders, and fast shipping. “If orders are placed by 1PM PST, we will ship a customer’s packages the same day,” says Yildirim.

By raising the level of hi-tech development and reducing the size of fun products, toy manufacturers have not only mesmerized children but also titillated adults with alluring and sophisticated playthings. While durability and capability will continue to advance for toys like RC helicopters, there is a reality that every pilot must face. “These are items that fly thousands of feet in the sky, and accidents happen. If a helicopter should fall from flight, there is a chance that it could break, and that is just the reality,” Yildirim says. “But this is why I have invested in carrying the parts for my helicopters.” With parts available to retailers, additional sales can be made for customers looking to repair their toys and correct any unfortunate accidents. Parts such as blades, engines and motors can also be found at My Toy Wonders’ wholesale site, www.wholesale-rc-helicopters.com.

A Peter Pan attitude is characteristic of Michael Becker, founder of Funko Inc., and Bill Ziegler, owner of Wild Bill’s Nostalgia Store. In an interview, Becker comments, “Who wants to live in the adult world anyway? That’s why I created this little company. It’s my hideout, my secret tree fort, if you will. I don’t need for everyone to understand it, I’m just hoping to find a few more like minded buddies to join along.” Ziegler, a like minded buddy, distributes many of Becker’s imaginative products, such as the legendary Wacky Wobbler Bobble Heads and now his new Mixo product line, Kooky Kans. Kooky Kans combine the look and nostalgia of tin lunch boxes from the 60s and 70s, along with the fun of everyone’s favorite action figures. Each Kan is available for $5.50 wholesale and retails about keystone at $10 apiece.

Kooky Kans Nostalgic of Tin Lunch Boxes

According to Becker, “We fill our Kooky Kans with the things dreams are made of and invented out of,” or in other words, sweets, treats and good eats. For instance, the Batman inspired Kooky Kan contains drink mix, candy and cereal. The eight and a half inch tall tin, resembling the shape of a thermos, comes in more favorite childhood figures, including Superman, Wonder Woman, Papa Smurf and Valentino the Vampire. Zeigler notes, “These Kooky Kans will do well. Metal lunch boxes always sell well, and these are made in their likeness.”

Ziegler’s interest in nostalgic merchandise makes Kooky Kans a perfect addition to his store in Middletown, CT. Ziegler is showcasing the Kooky Kan line at the Las Vegas ASD Show, July 31 – Aug. 3 at Booth V5262. Wild Bill’s has spent 20 years selling posters, prints, buttons and many other 60s and 70s items. Ziegler says, “In this economy, nostalgia still sells,” forecasting the expected success of the new Kooky Kan line.

The Line: This 25 year-old company, Great Lakes Wholesale and Marketing, was founded by retailers who grew up in the grocery industry, but realized there was an opportunity in closeouts and liquidations. When customers began asking for more consistency in products, the company started developing its own brands and lines. The vast majority of what Great Lakes carries are, “continuity items,” those goods that retailers order again and again because they know they’ll sell. The company sells popular items by the pallet load, but because their case sizes are smaller than their competitors, they can offer more goods per pallet shipped.

Minimum Order/Pricing: According to Gary MacDougal, chairman of the company, most minimum orders are around $800 to $900, plus a delivery fee. It all has to do with the cost of freight, so he recommends customers order at least a pallet to help get their moneys’ worth. “Our case size is smaller than others, so the customer can get a larger number of choices,” MacDougal says. “We even have a few customers in Africa. They buy container loads of products, and each container costs about $30,000 wholesale, but they can at least double that at retail,” he adds.

Special Features: A significant percentage of Great Lakes’ items retail at a dollar, and wholesale for no higher than 72 cents, with many other items at lower prices. In addition, the company has focused its website with different ordering options for customers. The order status reads where it is in the system, similar to what Amazon.com does, and contains carrier tracking information and more. This way, the customer can track the carrier and order directly. The website is also updated daily with new inventory arrivals.

Management Says: “We have a few thoughts for retailers to consider when opening a new store,” MacDougal says. “One common theme we keep seeing, is that successful people tend to go big with square feet and the number of locations, so we recommend they try to open two stores at once,” he adds. “We think it’s because they’re spreading their management and buying expertise over a larger operation. Good buyers and good managers get to leverage that strength via square footage. Larger stores tend to do better.”

This company supplies a line of hair straighteners for professional salon use, as well as for home use.

THE LINE: This company supplies a line of hair straighteners for professional salon use, as well as for home use. It also offers other products, including hair dryers, hair curlers and hair care products. Most hair straightener irons offer ceramic coated plates. PHI Beauty’s irons are solid ceramic plates that are then coated with tourmaline, a mineral that is considered a gem. Tourmaline technology creates negative ions and far-infrared heat. The negative ions seal the hair cuticle, essentially eliminating frizz. The far-infrared heat penetrates the hair shaft from the inside out, straightening the user’s hair quickly with the least amount of damage. Its flat irons come in three colors, including pink, black and grey.

Minimum Order/Pricing: These irons have a suggested retail of $69.99. There is no minimum order. For wholesale pricing, you have to order at least one case or 12 irons. Wholesale pricing is available upon request.

Literature: All products are shown on the website and PHI offers testimonials from actual users, a before and after gallery of photos, fashion links, and helpful hair and beauty articles.

Special Features: These flat irons offer many special features to help the user get her hair just as she wants it. The Ceramic/Tourmaline ion plates emit up to six times more negative ions to better seal hair cuticles; the new infrared heat technology seals in hair moisture and luster. The unit heats up in less than 30 seconds, unlike other flat irons on the market; it has a fixed temperature of 407 degrees Fahrenheit, and has an easy to use ergonomic design that makes it easy to flip, curl, press or hold the hair. It is ultra lightweight at only one pound, and offers 120v/60Hz for use in the U.S. or Canada. It offers a nine foot swivel cord to prevent tangling, and there is a one year warrantee.

Management Says: “The Ceramic/Tourmaline ion plates are a new innovation with the product. Tourmaline is a precious gem, and it puts out infrared rays, which are good for the user’s hair. What those rays do is shrink the moisture molecules and lock them into the hair. Therefore, the user’s hair will be shinier and silkier.”- Ryan Pattee, co-owner.

Oil Burner

THE LINE: This company supplies incense and oils and incense and oil burners, along with other products. Most of the incense and oil products are imported from India. There are 60 different oils in the line, creating a beautiful fragrance when burned. There are more than 100 incense fragrances. Further, incense made in India means that it comes in packs, rather than loose, which contributes to better shelf life. The incense is hand rolled rather than machine rolled. As for the burners, they are made of wood and bronze. Also included in the line are electric aroma lamps and tealight candles.

Minimum Order/Pricing: There is a minimum order of $100 for merchandise. The firm is also looking for distributors nationwide, and there are volume discounts available. Pricing on the oil and incense varies with product. An example is the firm’s Nagchampa incense, which is one of the world’s fastest selling incense. Its NC-15 Nagchampa (15 grams) pack (minimum quantity one dozen) is $6.99 wholesale. If you buy 50 dozen, the price drops to $6.50 per dozen. There is no suggested retail. The firm carries a complete line of Nagchampa products, including Nagchampa soaps and massage oils. Regarding the oils, the wholesale price for the two ounce bottle is $1.25, and these can easily be retailed for $7 to $10. There are also small bottles of oil, which are one-half ounce, that have a wholesale price of $.60 each. Prices on oils are the lowest in the market.

Special Features: The company offers a wood display for holding the oils. The displays come in two sizes: one for half ounce bottles of oil and one for two ounce bottles. Free displays are offered when 500 bottles of the half ounce oil are purchased, or 250 of the two ounce bottles. This is a countertop display of 24 by 15 inches. The large bottle display holds 96 two ounce bottles, and the small bottle display holds 216 bottles.

Incense Sticks

Management Says: “The natural incense is blended with flowers. The cost of products in the line is low, because the labor rate in India is low, which means that buyers of this product are getting better quality at lower prices.” – Vineet Gupta, owner.
